El Carmen de Viboral is a municipality in the San Nicolás Valley, in eastern Antioquia, next to Rionegro, La Ceja, Marinilla and El Santuario. Locals call it "the cradle of handmade ceramics", and the name holds up: the first pottery factory opened in 1899 and several workshops still paint every piece by hand. Since 2011 El Carmen de Viboral ceramics have had a protected designation of origin.

Most visitors come for the day from Medellín. They walk the Ceramics Street, step into a workshop, have lunch near the main square and drive home with a set of plates in the trunk. With more time, the municipality drops to 800 or 900 m in the Melcocho and Santo Domingo river canyons, where you find clear swimming holes and waterfalls. Those trips mean an early start or a night in the area.
