Waterfalls in El Carmen de Viboral

In the Santo Domingo river canyon there is water falling everywhere. It is the wildest part of the municipality and also the hardest to visit.

Valley of Waterfalls (Valle de las Cascadas)

The town's culture and tourism office describes it as a landscape of mountains and threads of water above the Santo Domingo river canyon, in the La Aguada area. The canyon has primary and secondary tropical forest, streams and very steep walls, so from any high point you can see several falls at once.

La Esmeralda waterfall

The best known fall in the valley. The regional site Oriente Antioqueño describes it as three drops adding up to a little over 900 m, although we found no official measurement. Titi monkeys, pacas, coatis and howler monkeys have been seen in the area.

Getting there: even though it is in El Carmen de Viboral, the practical route is the Medellín-Bogotá highway, taking the San Francisco turn and then going from La Piñuela to La Vega. From there you continue on foot. It is a long trip and best done with a local guide.

El Picacho falls

A 13 m waterfall on the Cocorná River, with clear, cold water. It is on the Antioquia government's list of sights for the municipality.

Before you go

For something gentler, the rural viewpoints can be reached by car or bike without going down into the canyons.
