Melcocho River: where it is, how to get there and what to know
One of the clearest rivers in Antioquia runs through the low end of the municipality, around 900 m above sea level. It is not easy to reach, which is exactly why it stays so clean.

Where it is
The Melcocho rises in the El Porvenir area of El Carmen de Viboral and runs about 22 km to meet the Santo Domingo River at a spot called Los Encuentros. Its canyon forms the border with Cocorná, so some sources place it in that municipality and others in El Carmen. The El Retiro area, where almost everyone starts, is claimed by both.
According to the town's Culture Institute, the canyon lies inside the Melcocho and Santo Domingo River Canyons Regional Protected Forest Reserve, managed by the environmental authority Cornare. It covers 26,533.5 hectares, 62% of the municipality.
How to get there
You do not reach it from El Carmen town but from the Medellín-Bogotá highway:
- Leave Medellín through the Oriente tunnel or Las Palmas toward the airport and take the Medellín-Bogotá highway east.
- At La Piñuela take the turn for San Francisco and continue to Pailania.
- From there it is about 15 km of dirt road to El Retiro. Tour operators use 4x4s because the road is rough.
- From El Retiro you walk down to the river.
Google Maps puts it at about 2 hours 40 minutes from Medellín to the river, according to Caracol Radio. In September 2025 the bus company Flota El Carmen announced scheduled trips from the El Carmen sports arena (coliseo) to the Melcocho for COP 30,000 each way. Check with them that the service is still running before you rely on it.
Booking required. To enter El Retiro and the canyon you must book with CAICA, the local environmental information center, on +57 321 326 0333, according to information published in September 2025. Call before you set off.
The best known swimming holes
- Dulce Melcocho: the first one as you come down from El Retiro, large and with the clearest water.
- Puente Amarillo: about 2.5 to 3 km along the bank. It has a yellow suspension bridge, a deep calm pool, a small shop and basic rooms.
- Further in: the old mule trail continues up the canyon to El Porvenir, inside El Carmen de Viboral, about 8 km from El Retiro.
Where to stay
Inside the canyon there are simple hostels and farmhouses run by local families. Almost none are on Booking.com; you book them by phone or through your tour operator. If you want more comfort, sleep in El Carmen town and leave very early: compare options in hotels in El Carmen de Viboral or farm stays and glamping.
Tips
- Go with a guide if you do not know the area. After heavy rain the river rises fast; stay out if the water turns muddy or starts rising.
- Bring water shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, cash and food. There is no phone signal in much of the canyon.
- Down there it is hot and humid, even when El Carmen is chilly. Check the weather first.
- Pack out all your trash. It is a forest reserve.
- Until a few years ago the armed conflict kept the area closed. It is visited today, but ask the town hall or local operators about current conditions before you go.
If you like waterfalls, continue to the Valley of Waterfalls in the neighboring Santo Domingo canyon, and if you are driving, see how to get there.
